about

ostara blessings ~ welcoming the equal balance of light + dark in the northern hemisphere ~~~~

epistle came through me like a newly opened window, first day of spring. a voice memo made in my living room, singing into a fan, something gently writhing through, shaking off the old and standing on the precipice of new. it is something i have carried in my pocket for some time as a moment just for myself to remember and love. i'd like to share it with you now as a note from the liminal, an offering for the in-between, and a bridge to my new live ep, rarefied air, released this april, on the 23rd, via tibet street records.

thank you
for you
love you
brooke

~~~
I have carried this song in my pocket for years. My secret note-to-self, in a cloud, in a whisper, only mine. Made on a phone in a room behind a sun-faded curtain, sung into a fan, there was just a single window, it was open and pulsing. The rain had just ended. I sat on a wooden floor, eyes-closed with the breath of the window, I asked for you. When you came you didn't feel like you used to, the curtain blew. I welcomed you. I opened the mouth -- that mouth was mine, the mouth that begged for months -- to let a mouth-sound come from its open O and that is when all the sound fell out. Head glows like a candle, rain-watered on earth. A voice memo of a small sound kept alive, that is what this is. It may not be much but it is mine that kept me living. Now it is the end of a beginning and with arms stretched through a new window, in the rain that is ostara, I tell you you can take it, and that I am ready to start from here.
pinned by various names
under a weight, i try to escape
the paper, the page
the weight of each phrase
next to a name
moon-spun, the infant one
under the day, it's all about your breath
and your breathing
a simple appeasing --
whisper a name and i'll tell you i've lost it
whisper a name and i'll tell you i'm fine
tell me the same but you show me you've lost it
tell me today and i'll tell you you lied
about
loom Toronto, Ontario
"brooke's loom occupies a haunted netherworld of equal amounts light/dark, love/fear, life/death... clear she feels most present sitting in these places of surrender though the public witnessing may be rare with a handful of intentional shows a year since 2009. Creating in welcomed reclusive waves, her delicate spareness of sounds let the weight of her subject matter spiral into soft release. ... more
